Power Chairs
By mobilitytiger | May 2, 2008
A power chair, or electric wheelchair, is a very useful device for those who need wheelchairs. They are similar in the service that they provide to a regular manual wheelchair, however they provide so much more. Power chairs utilize an electric motor to transport a seated individual. They have much smaller wheels than a manual wheelchair and typically can move faster than a typical person can walk.
Power chairs have varying ranges per charge, but most can travel at least 10 miles and many much more. One design that is very popular is the mid-wheel power chair. This type of power chair has a larger set of wheels that is located below the seat. They then have two smaller sets of wheels, one located at the front and one at the rear. The front and rear wheels add stability, but it is the rear wheel that handles the movement and turning. By utilizing a mid-wheel design these units have a much smaller turning radius and are very manuverable.
Power chairs are great because unlike a traditional wheelchair, they do not require immense upper body strength or someone to push the chair for you.
